Rack build and installation
Server racks from zero to fully operational: delivery, assembly, power, cabling and labelling — every stage handled in house.
Building racks is rarely where things go wrong. Things go wrong around it: parts that turn out to be incomplete, rails that do not quite fit the depth of the cabinet, power rails that only turn out to clash with the cabling afterwards. So I run the whole thing myself, from the pallet to the handover.
Delivery and inventory
Everything comes in and is counted against the bill of materials first: frames, rails, blanking panels, cage nuts, PDU brackets. Missing or wrongly shipped parts surface here — not halfway through the build, when a replacement delivery costs a week.
Unpacking and staging
For each rack I lay out the parts in the order they are needed. It sounds like overhead, but it saves more time than any other step: no hunting through boxes, no half sets, and at the end you know exactly what is left over.
Setting and aligning the frames
Cabinets are positioned, levelled and aligned with each other, so doors close and panels run flat across the whole row. A row that starts out crooked cannot be straightened afterwards without taking everything apart again.
Power
Vertical PDUs are mounted and connected to separate feeds, with the connections routed so they stay out of the cable paths. Feeds are measured and labelled per path before any equipment goes in.
Installing equipment
Rails, servers, switches and patch panels go in according to the layout agreed up front. Blanking panels close off the empty units, so the air separation between cold and hot aisle stays intact — otherwise you are mostly cooling the aisle.
Cabling and labelling
Cabling is cut to length and routed through the trays, copper and fibre kept apart. Both ends of every cable get the same label, and the layout goes into the documentation.
Installing and connecting switches
Switches are mounted, given power and uplinks, and brought up. I think along on the configuration — firmware, VLAN layout, port assignment — but the network design stays with you or your network administrator.
Handover
You get a row that is powered up and documented: which port sits where, which feed on which PDU, what spare parts are left. A next administrator can carry on without me.
